Original U.S. WWII Era “Theater Made” Double-Edged Combat Knife With Micarta Handle and Leather Sheath - Named To “Cpl. R.J. Benoit”

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a unique and fascinating fighting knife from the U.S. during WWII. The knife was made by the armorers and engineers stationed in the Pacific theater, who were responsible for maintaining and modifying weapons and gear on large capital ships. These skilled fabricators were essential to the war effort and were often required to create weapons and equipment from scratch from the soldiers who requested them.

Usually, fighting knives like these were made from existing weapons or steel components, and the hilts were cast from metals such as aluminum or zinc. However, this knife is different. It appears to have been made from a handmade blade, which gives it a unique and personal touch. What's even more interesting is that the blade has been etched with the name of the soldier who may have used it - CPL. R.J. BENOIT US ARMY / WW2.

The etching/stamping on the blade is a fascinating detail that raises questions about when it was done. It's unclear whether it was done during the war or in the post-war years, because the term "World War 2" was first used in 1939, and it's uncertain when the knife was etched. However, this small detail adds to the historical significance of the knife and makes it all the more interesting to collectors and historians alike.

This particular knife has a micarta handle that is secured to the handle by three brass pins. Micarta is a brand name for composites of linen, canvas, paper, fiberglass, carbon fiber, or other fabric in a thermosetting plastic. It was originally used in electrical and decorative applications. The handle is in excellent condition and shows no signs of heavy wear or tear. However, the blade had suffered some minor corrosion at some point in the past, which was then cleaned away.

As for the scabbard, it is an original leather piece that appears to have been specifically made for the knife. The scabbard is in great condition, with no major signs of wear and tear. It is still quite serviceable and could be used to protect the knife during storage or transport. Overall, this knife is an excellent example of a well-made and well-maintained custom piece.

Definitely an interesting piece of WWII Militaria. Ready to research and display!
